Marie E. Gilchrist collection.

This collection consists of narrative daily journals and field notes of surveying expeditions maintained by William Ives, deputy surveyor. The daily journals covers various months of the years 1846-1848, and the summer of 1850. The field notes are of surveys of Scarecrow Island, Gill Island, Isle Royale, and another island situated in Thunder Bay River. The collection also contains a "Memorandum of a tour of surveying with Wm. A. Burt", dating from Aug. 1, 1844 through Oct. 27, 1844; an acoount book of daily household expenses from 1904; and a printed copy of a letter to William Burt from Richard S. Mellen, Jan. 20, 1870, being an account of a survey trip in 1844 which included a discovery of iron in the Lake Superior country.
